Pokémon Go Developer Unveils New AR Game That Lets You Breed Unique Pets

Niantic, the developer behind the wildly successful Pokémon Go, has unveiled its next augmented reality game

Peridot is all about caring and breeding Peridots – one-of-a-kind magical creatures.

According to Niantic: “after thousands of years of slumber, Peridots (or Dots for short) are waking to a world vastly different from the one in which they used to roam, and they’ll need our help to protect them from extinction.”

Players will be able to raise their own Peridots from birth to adulthood, explore the world together and develop bonds with their Dots.

Niantic says each Peridot is unique and will have its own distinct personality traits.

Players can also breed their Peridots and collaborate with other players to diversify new generations of Peridots.

The game – like Niantic’s other projects – encourages players to head outside to seek out new places to play.

Built with Niantic’s Lightship platform, the game will be able to recognise real-world surfaces like sand, water and grass.

No word on when Peridot will launch but Niantic says it will be rolling out in “select markets” from this month, on both the App store and Google Play, with more markets added later.

Peridot is Niantic’s latest project since Pikmin Bloom was launched last October.

Pokémon Go, which launched in 2016 and is still going strong today, is still the developer’s largest moneymaker, raking in over US$900 million last year.
