After years of speculation, Rockstar Games has confirmed development in the next game for the Grand Theft Auto series.
In a press release, Rockstar said “with every new project, our goal is always to significantly move beyond what we’ve previously delivered. (…) We look forward to sharing more as soon as we are ready.”
It’s worth noting that Rockstar didn’t explicitly say the next game would be GTA 6, the previous games in the GTA series have always been named numerically. (GTA 5 was released eight years ago.)
Either way, Rockstar was extremely scanty on the details – we have no trailer and not even the faintest idea where the next game will be based in.
Rumours abound – the latest suggests that for the first time, the new game will have radio music.
This will also be the first game in the series to be released since Rockstar’s co-founder Dan Houser left the studio in 2020 – he was one of the driving forces behind GTA and the Red Dead series.
We also don’t have a timeframe for this new game, although most pundits expect it to be a long way off, likely somewhere in 2024.

IGN reported in 2020 that Rockstar was working on a new entry in the Grand Theft Auto series, but it was a long way from release and may take a different form due to the alleged changes at the gaming studio as it tries to crack down on crunch in game development.
Grand Theft Auto is one of the most popular game franchises out there – GTA 3 is considered a landmark game for open world titles – and the series is considered one of the best selling video games franchises ever.
