Japan Picks Breath of the Wild As Best Game Of All Time

Japan is widely seen as the home of video games even though it wasn’t the one who invented them, but their contribution to the industry cannot be overlooked.

In 2018, it was estimated that 67.6 million people in Japan played video games.

And now a (small) portion of that population have spoken – picking Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild to be the greatest game ever made

Over 50,000 people voted in TV Asahi’s recent poll on the top 100 best games of all time. Also on the list – Persona 5, Kingdom Hearts, Okami and Dragon Quest V.

Check out the full list here.

Unsurprising that Breath of the Wild topped the list – the Nintendo Switch and Wii game was released in 2017 and by early 2020, had sold over 1.5 million retail copies in Japan alone. Worldwide, total sales just for the Switch version hit 24 million by September 2021.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild also swept The Game Awards in 2017 – taking Best Action/Adventure Game and the coveted Game of the Year.

For those who want more – well, Nintendo says a sequel to Breath of the Wild is in the works and is expected to be released this year.
