Polish developer CD Projekt says a new Witcher game is in development.
While no details of the game was provided, CD Projekt said the new saga will use Unreal Engine 5 instead of its REDengine, which means the game could see more photorealism.
The studio also said they will closely collaborate with Epic Games’ developers to tailor the engine for open-world experiences.
Now, Witcher 3 had a massive open-world for 2015, with its rich lore and (both marked and unmarked) quests.
It’s so big that seven years later, its easter eggs are still being uncovered – the latest one was found just days ago.
We also don’t know if the new game will be a continuation of Geralt’s adventures.
The poster CD Projekt released only had the tantalising text “The Witcher: A New Saga Begins” and a feline-ish medallion, which is different from the Wolf medallion that Geralt wears.
Unreal Engine 5 was most recently showcased at the 2021 Game Awards, where it was used to power The Matrix Awakens – half open-world game and half tech demo.
And as PCGamer pointed out, the shift to Unreal Engine 5 could also ease crunch at CD Projekt before the new game releases.
The latest Witcher game won’t be the only one built on Epic’s Unreal Engine 5; Fortnite is already using it, while S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2 is one of the most anticipated games using Unreal Engine 5.
For those wondering when we could see the latest instalment in the Witcher series – well, CD Projekt gave no time frame or release date, but it is worth noting that development for Witcher 3 began in 2011 and took almost four years before it was released.
