Looking to buy a PlayStation 5?
It’s now going to cost you about US$50 more, depending on where you’re buying it.
Sony says it’s hiking the price of its PS5 due to “challenging economic conditions”, ie: high inflation rates, rising material costs and fluctuating currency trends.
In a blog post, Sony said it will increase prices in “select markets” across Europe, Middle East and Africa, the Asia-Pacific, Latin America as well as Canada.
Prices in the United States will not be affected for now.
That means a PS5 Digital Edition will cost now you €449.99 in Europe (up from €399.99), ¥49,478 (up from ¥43,978) in Japan and CAD$519.99 (up from CAD$499.99) in Canada.
The price increase takes place immediately, except in Japan where it starts on 15 September.
In a statement, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s CEO and President Jim Ryan said the added costs were a “necessity”, given the current global economic environment and its impact on the company’s business.
He said Sony’s top priority will continue to be improving the PS5 supply situation – issues with the global supply chain have resulted in PS5s being extremely hard to come by since the console launched in late 2020.
Gaming rivals Xbox and Nintendo have both told Eurogamer they would not raise prices for their consoles, or at least, not that we know of right now.
