Electronics Arts Is Working On A Lord Of The Rings Mobile Game

Electronic Arts is developing a mobile game based on The Lord of the Rings. 

According to a statement, The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth will feature immersive storytelling, turn-based combat, and a wide number of characters from across The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. 

Players can battle through some of the most iconic stories from Tolkien’s world and fight against the “great evils of Middle-earth”. 

EA called the game, which is free-to-play, a “Collectible Role-Playing Game” which would bring the fantasy and adventure of The Lord of the Rings series to old and new fans. 

EA is making the game in conjunction with Middle-earth Enterprises – a division of the Saul Zaentz Company, which holds the exclusive rights to the film, merchandising, stage and other rights in certain literary works of J. R. R. Tolkien, including The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. 

Neither a trailer nor any artworks for the game have been released. 

But what we do know is this – the game is in active development by Capital Games (the studio behind Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes) and is expected to enter limited regional beta testing this summer.

The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth is the latest addition to EA’s mobile portfolio. 

The company already has a slew of mobile games under its wing but is betting big on the mobile market – last June, EA bought Playdemic, the developer of the mobile game Golf Clash, for US$1.4 billion.

A report on mobile gaming in 2021 also found that it contributed over half of the US$173 billion global video games revenue in 2020 and the market is expected to be worth over US$270 billion by 2030.
