The Silent Hill rumour mill is in overdrive after it emerged gaming studio Konami has updated the Japanese trademarks for a slew of titles.
As spotted by Reddit user u/LongJonSiIver, updates for the trademarks of Silent Hill, Frogger and Tokimeki Memorial were released by the Japan Patent Office on 15 March.
What does this mean?
Well, apart from the possibility of routine trademark renewals, some have speculated that Konami is about to bring the survival game franchise back.
After all, we were supposed to get Silent Hills years ago, the ninth volume in the game, before it was suddenly cancelled in 2015.
Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima was connected to the title and Norman Reedus was set to star as Silent Hills’ main protagonist, before Kojima parted ways with Konami and published his atmospheric action game – Death Stranding.
VGC reported last year that multiple Silent Hill games were in development after Konami decided to look into the popular series again.
While the possibility of a remake is tempting; late last year the creator of Silent Hill, Keiichiro Toyama, told VGC that the game would be hard to remake, given that “the gameplay as a concept is a little older”.
Silent Hill has been rather neglected by Konami recently – the franchise hasn’t seen a new title since 2012 and more recently, Konami seemed to have forgotten to renew the registration for the silenthill.com domain name.
It’s since been bought and…well, clearly not by Konami.
