The next installation of Link’s adventures is coming…just not this year.
Nintendo says it is delaying the launch of the wildly anticipated sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild to early 2023.
The developer had initially said they were aiming to launch the game later this year.
In a short video statement, Eiji Aonuma, the producer of The Legend of Zelda series, said the team was “extending the development time” and apologised for the delay.
No other reason was given but Aonuma said the team was continuing to work on the series.
Aonuma also said the adventures in this sequel will “take place not just on the ground as in the previous game, but also in the skies above. However, the expanded world goes beyond that, and there will be an even wider variety of features you can enjoy, including new encounters and gameplay elements.”
Fans don’t seem to be too broken up about news of the delay – in fact, more seem fixated on the state of Link’s Master Sword, which looked different than usual.
Breath of the Wild was first launched in 2017 for the Wii U and as a flagship game for the Nintendo Switch.
Nintendo would eventually go on to sell over 25 million copies of the game – becoming one of the Switch’s best-selling games.
The yet untitled sequel to Breath of the Wild was announced back in 2019 but the final name of the game has not been confirmed because Nintendo said the title might give too much information away.
