Fans of WoW, mark your calendars!
Blizzard will unveil the next expansion for World of Warcraft on 19 April.
In a statement, Blizzard said the development team was excited to showcase where your next adventures in Azeroth will go.
The last World of Warcraft expansion – Shadowlands – was announced in 2020.
As VentureBeat noted, WoW expansions usually make their debut at BlizzCon, but Blizzard has put the annual convention on hold so the reveal will take place via a virtual presentation.
World of Warcraft is a multiplayer online role-playing game that was first released in 2004 and has seen eight major expansions packs.
WoW has been dubbed one of the best MMORPGs of all time, and in 2010, recorded a peak of 12 million subscribed players.
The popularity of the game has since waned somewhat; Activision Blizzard’s latest earnings release found that Blizzard games (including Warcraft, Diablo and Overwatch) had a monthly active user base of 27 million – a drop of 2 million from end 2020.
Reasons have ranged from a weak storyline to convoluted game mechanics, while others have moved away from the games after sexual harassment claims emerged from Blizzard.
Blizzard will be hoping to turn things around this year after they unveiled a slew of events – including a Warcraft mobile game, set to be revealed in May.
It’s still unknown how the game will look but the company is currently actively hiring for the project.
The news was first announced in February and while details are scant, the team has promised “all-new mobile Warcraft content”.
Rumours suggest Blizzard could be developing a Pokémon Go-style game set in the Warcraft universe
